System Overview

Symmetry™ Video Management System is the next generation video surveillance solution for both analog and digital video. The platform supports the migration from analog to digital for any size organization.

In addition to supporting a range of cameras and DVR’s from leading manufacturers, the Symmetry product range includes ENVS Video Servers and EN-7900 Series Video Encoders.

The Symmetry system provides a complete solution including powerful options for live video management and the centralized storage of video from the Symmetry ENVS and selected MPEG-4 IP cameras.

The Symmetry Video Management module expands the scope of the security management system into a truly seamless solution for access control, intrusion, identity management, biometrics and video.

The maximum number of cameras that can be added to a Symmetry system depends on the type of software which is being used. Licenses need to be purchased to add cameras up to the following limits:

• Symmetry Business – up to 64 cameras
• Symmetry Professional – up to 512 cameras
• Symmetry Enterprise – no camera limit 

Symmetry Video Management can store video for network IP cameras and video encoders onto PCs or Servers running the Symmetry Network Video Recorder (NVR software). In addition to storing data on the NVR PC / server it is possible to route the video from the NVR PC to network attached storage (NAS) or storage area networks (SAN).

The number of cameras that can be processed by a single NVR can vary considerably based on the camera settings and the processing power of the PC / Server. Typically 128 cameras can be processed by a dual or quad core NVR. Further information is provided in the Symmetry Video Design Guide. For small systems NVR software and up to 40 cameras can be installed on the main Symmetry PC / server. Where there is a combined Symmetry Access Control and Video system it is best use a separate NVR PC when there are 64 card readers or more, even if the video system is quite small.
